Skopje's Old Bazaar by Bike: A Two-Wheel Time Machine

Skopje's Old Bazaar by Bike: A Two-Wheel Time Machine

Cobblestones, coppersmiths, and centuries of history — the Old Bazaar is best explored slowly. Here's how to do it by bike.

Skopje's Old Bazaar is the largest preserved Ottoman bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul. Riding through it at dawn — before the shops open — is one of the most magical experiences our city offers. We recommend an early morning loop: start at Stone Bridge, cross the Vardar, weave through the narrow alleys of the bazaar, pause at Kapan An for Turkish coffee, then climb up to Skopje Fortress for sunrise views over the entire valley. The cobblestones can be slippery when wet, so we provide bikes with wider, grippy tires for this route. Total distance is about 5 km, and you'll come back with stories — and photos — that no walking tour can match.
